Our first trip to Carlisle was a great experience. The weather was hot and dry this year, far different from the past several years from what we were told. The show is well attended (about 6,000 to 7,000 cars) and very well organized. Half the vendor space is devoted to vendors like Corvette America, Mid-America, Corvette Central, and just about every other Corvette supplier from the Mississippi East. All the exhaust suppliers were there, and the installation tents were constantly busy. GM also had a trailer set up where you answered several questions on a computer, got a free "T" shirt, and had your picture taken with their yellow racing cars as a background. GM had their engineering staff present with several ZR-1's and Z-06 vehicles, and were available to answer any questions customers had regarding their Corvette performance, etc. The other half of the vendors looked like a Corvette junk yard. You could purchase almost any part from 1953 up to the current C6. I could not believe the prices they had on some of the older cars that needed to be rebuilt. For $29K you could buy a 1962 "shell", no engine, with maybe half the parts you would need for a restore. It was interested to walk around and talk to the vendors about big blocks, and rebuilding tips, although I have no desire to begin a project that large. My wife tells me I would be in my 90's before I completed a rebuild on a 1960's something Corvette. She may be right! Carlisle is approximately 1100 miles from the Twin Cities. We drove to Gary, Indiana where we took Hwy 30 east to Penn, through the Allegheny Mountains. A beautiful drive, although road construction everywhere. We also got a chance to visit Hershey, PA, and tour the Chocolate Factory. It must have been family day, since everybody with kids had the same idea as we did that day. For the drive back we took the freeway through PA, Ohio, Indiana, Ill., and Wisconsin, with a stop at Notre Dame University in South Bend where we toured the campus. All in all a nice trip.

I'm planning on doing a one day trip up to Brainerd on Sunday, Sept. 5 to watch the Trans Am race along with several other SCCA races (all on the short course). There will also be drag racing taking place. I will probably leave the Twin Cities at 7 a.m., returing late in the afternoon. Let me know if you have any interest in caravaning up or back. More info is available on the BIR website.
